Case Study: Large Midwest County

Recently, a large county in the Midwest was investigating new security appliances. This IT department at the county had Check Point, Surf Control and Barracuda in place, and the customer believed they were well protected since they had well-known name brand security technologies in place.

Unfortunately, despite their investment in strong technology and other security precautions, the county was struck by a “rootkit” virus. Rootkit is a hacker tool that lands on a deep level of the OS (such as binaries) inside the infected computer. It hides its presence, but actively listens for open ports and steals command line code. In this particular instance, this virus cost the county hundreds of thousand of dollars to clean up.

The customer brought in a Barrier1 appliance, and after only 45 days of testing, the intelligent threat management solution defeated three attacks that had compromised the other security devices. After reviewing and analyzing the test results, the customer purchased the Barrier1 appliance to replace the various point solutions.

The Challenges

The customer required a product to provide a higher level of protection against blended threats and rootkits.

The Solution

The Barrier1 appliance was installed in network behind Check Point, Surf Control, and Barracuda as a proof of concept. The Barrier1 appliance stopped threats as it sat behind the other point solution products.

The Results

After 45 days of testing, Barrier1 logged 637,185 Priority1 attacks. Three of these defeated the existing security technologies and would have compromised the network had Barrier1 not been in place.
